Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does the team have anything to do with the Haverling High School team?
A. The BGBC (Bath Girls Basketball Club) is not related to Haverling High School.
It is not recognized nor sponsored by the school district.

Q. Will my daughter be guaranteed playing time in each tournament?
A. Being that each player is raising funds or contributing money to the team, the answer is yes. However, I cannot guarantee equal playing time. My philosophy is not to win as much as it is to expose the girls to a higher level of competition.

Q. What is the level of competition in the tournaments?
A. Most AAU teams use the best players from surrounding areas. The level of play will be very high.

Q. When are the games?
A. Games are held on weekends. We play a regional tournament schedule that runs from April through June with the possibility of a tournament in July.

Q. What if my daughter gets injured or can’t make a tournament—can I get a refund?
A. No. Money that is contributed to the team will go to entry fees, which will be paid up front. No money can be refunded.

Q. How will the team get to the tournaments?
A. We will carpool. Parents will need to be able to help drive the players.

Q. How much are the sponsor fees?
A. These will vary depending on the number of players and the number of tournaments that will be attended. Tournaments cost an average of $400. As an example: If the team attended 5 tournaments (5 x $400=$2000.00) and there were 10 players on the team, each player would be responsible for $200.00.

Q. Other than the sponsor fees, what other expenses can I expect?
A. Players will need lunch/dinner money when away at a tournament. Most tournaments also offer t-shirts for sale for those interested. Players will be responsible for purchasing a uniform (cost varies, but is usually around $40-$50) and AAU membership ($10-$12).

Q. Does the team do fund raising?
A. In order to help convey the cost of paying for uniforms and sponsorship fees, the team usually does two fund raisers (a pizza sale and a raffle).

Q. Can a younger player play on an older team?
A. Yes, players can always play on older teams (ie., a 13 year old can play on a 15U AAU team). It should be an exceptional player however.

Q. What determines the age groups?
A. July 1st, at 12:00AM is the determining date for the age of the competitor. Players can see what age group they fit within by visiting the following link and entering their birthdate: http://aaugirlsbasketball.org/pages/agedefinition_new.asp.

Q. Will the team have practices?
A. Being that the team will be composed of varsity, JV and modified level athletes as well as potential players from other schools, we will need to conduct practices. Tentatively, we will have practices on Sundays from 3-5:00PM and perhaps one or two during the week before a tournament.

Q. Does my daughter have to be able to make every tournament? What if she can’t make the first day, but can make the second day of a tournament?
A. I hope to have enough players that if one or two players can’t make a tournament that we will still be able to play. Please keep in mind that our entry fees are non-refundable. If a player can’t make the first day of the tournament, she is still eligible to play the next day. The opposite is also true.

Q. Will there be a try-out for the team?
A. Try-outs will depend on the number of interested players. We look to carry a maximum of 12 players.

Q. How many games should I expect the team to play at each tournament?
A. Most tournaments guarantee 4 games—2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.

Q. What kind of college exposure can I expect to get?
A. College coaches routinely attend the tournaments looking for talented players. Playing AAU’s shows that a player has a desire to play above and beyond their regular high school season.

Q. Who are the coaches?
A. Randy Abrams will coach the Blaze and the Swish team. Should there be sufficient interest for another age level, the coach would be determined after an interview process with Mr. Abrams. All coach must be members of the AAU organization and will be First Aid and CPR certified.

Q. If I’m interested in having my daughter(s) play/tryout, what do I do next?
A. Fill out the attached interest form and return to Mr. Abrams.
